If you live in Culver City, you probably enjoy the great weather and close access to all the attractions of the Los Angeles area, but you might not know too many details about this city. Here are a few facts that might surprise you.

For centuries, the Tongva people have lived in the region that is now called as Culver City. During the Spanish settlement, Culver City became a part of various Spanish ranchos. When the Civil war came, the city became a host to Camp Latham, which was a training center for Union soldiers.

Eventually, the city was incorporated by Harry Culver in 1917 and it soon became an important location for the booming movie business. Metro Goldwyn Mayer built their studios in Culver City as well as several other film-making companies. Movies such as Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz both were filmed partially on studio lots in Culver City. Today Sony Pictures Studio is the largest employer in the city with more than 6,000 employees.

Culver City is home to more than one dozen parks, including a skate park and a dog park aptly named "The Boneyard." Several parks include recreation centers and most have large playgrounds for children, as well as soccer fields, basketball courts and softball diamonds. Carlson Park is home to the Culver City Public Theater, which provides a variety of open-air productions during the summer months all free of charge.

The city's downtown area has its own fair share of intriguing historic sites and gems. One of the most popular historic sites on the city's downtown area is the Culver Hotel, a hotel that hosted the cast of "The Wizard of Oz" during their filming stages. Another popular historic site is the Hems Bakery Building. From the early 1930s to 1956, this historic site was owned by a high profile industrial baking company, and is now housing several bars and restaurants as well as housewares and furniture stores.

If you want to savor premium coffee while staying in Culver City, just go around the corner from West L.A. College. There, you will see Island Monarch Coffee, a popular coffee shop that offers fresh and delectable coffee. It starts with their premium gourmet beans that are shipped from South American and Hawaii. These beans won't be roasted until they reach the Los Angeles area, and they will only be ground when you order your coffee. Moreover, their water is safe and pure, as it has undergone a purified process called reverse osmosis.
