When you see statistics telling you that about 400 billion cups of coffee are being enjoyed by people worldwide every year, you can't possibly claim that it is not one of the most popular drinks. Since the first coffee house opened its doors in Constantinople around 1475, coffee shops have sprung up around the globe and pretty much seem to be located on every street corner. If you want more interesting facts, then maybe you should keep reading.

Looking way back to where and how coffee fascination started should lead us to the Ethiopian farmers who got curious. They found goats munching on berries which they then noticed to be more energetic so they tried the berries to see if they too could enjoy a boost from these fruits. And so began the coffee-eating habit of people throughout Africa. Here tribesmen would mix these coffee berries with fat and munch on them in order to gain some energy to get them through their workday, not unlike people today.

It is rather common for us to believe that caffeine's purpose is merely to give one that extra energy but this is not its only purpose and there is a reason why caffeine is an important part of a coffee plant. The truth is that caffeine helps in the pollination process of the coffee plant by attracting bees that are agents of pollination and love the caffeine. Also, slugs and other animals intending to harm the coffee plant stay away from these plants because caffeine is a toxin to them. This is how caffeine is also able to give protection to the plant.

One thing people, especially those overly conscious of the weight gained, must love about coffee is that it has almost no calories even when it contains a minimal amount of fat. Expect that your regular cup of filtered brewed coffee contains only about half a percent of fat. This is not the same with espresso though as this one contains fat of about 2.5%.

For those who don't know this - it is true that Theodore Roosevelt was one heavy coffee drinker consuming as much as gallon a day. Voltaire, the famous French writer, also was said to drink copious amounts of this brew each day, perhaps even 50 cups. This of course is not being advised for anyone because such a high amount consumed can be very dangerous and psychoactive too. Yes, it is highly fatal for anyone to attempt consuming extremely high amount of caffeine. The amount of caffeine in 100 cups of coffee can be fatal, although few people would have the time or inclination to test out that theory. But looking at the brighter side, coffee can give you antioxidants which give health benefits when you drink on highly recommended safe levels.
